The thing to understand is we need to pace ourselves properly, so we can endure to the end of our task. What good does it do us if we start a project, and go fast for awhile, but don’t have the energy to finish because we burn out?? Making it to the End is more important than speed. So if a baby-step pace is what we need to do, it’s better to go that pace and finish than it is to go quick and quit halfway.

Previous Natural Wisdom post

Hello Readers, hope all’s well. Time for another post in my new series, Natural Wisdom. In case you missed the first few posts, this is a series where I write about some of the lessons God has taught me, through nature. God teaches us so much through nature if we’re willing to watch and listen to see and hear the Wisdom. God teaches us a lot about Himself through nature. He teaches us about lots of topics.

The previous post was about the critical importance of getting started on big jobs, projects, or passions. It’s all about getting started. But in my latest sessions working on my land, I’ve been reminded of the critical importance of the opposite of that previous lesson. It’s all about how we finish.

Yes, a seeming contradiction. But hey, those with a little Wisdom know that life in this weird world is a paradox, and full of contradictions. People are full of contradictions too. And yet somehow this doesn’t stop God’s Creation from continuing on, day after day. There comes a time when you learn that life is full of contradictions, and that’s just how it is. To sum it up in a few words, I would say: “Two things can be true at the same time.” And that’s the case here as well.

It’s all about getting started. And it’s all about how we finish. It’s about taking that first step, and it’s about enduring to the end.

We have to endure to the end. That means in our projects, jobs, and passions like what I discuss in this series, Natural Wisdom. And it also means in a broader sense enduring to the End of our Spiritual Walk with Christ. Our task, and it’s not an easy one, is to stay true to Christ’s teachings until the End. For most of us that means enduring to the end of our physical life, when our physical body will obey God’s Natural laws and die. But for some it will mean enduring to the End of suffering and persecution until the Second Coming of Christ.

The way is long, and difficult. So what matters more in the end is not how good our start was, or how fast we go, but rather if we can make it all the way or not. So that’s the topic for today.

Pace or Perish

What’s more important than speed is endurance. We need to be able to endure to the end, and continue our work until it’s finished. This means we need to pace ourselves on every big project we do.

What good does it do us to go fast for a while if it means we don’t finish, because we don’t have the energy left?? If we go too fast and bite off more than we can chew, we won’t make it to the end, even with God advising and helping us. If we listen to God, we’ll hear Him telling us to pace ourselves. Pacing ourselves to a level we can handle empowers us to endure.

One part of pacing ourselves is understanding that some days, we just don’t have it in us to do the same amount of work we normally would. I felt that, the day I wrote this post. When I worked on my land this morning, I didn’t have the same energy as usual. So I got less done. Oh well!! I know I’ll be back at it again as soon as I can. What difference does it make?? My project (developing my land) will not fail because I had a less productive day today.

Trying to do more work than we’re capable of is not pacing ourselves. That’s overworking ourselves, and it’s not sustainable. It’s also not Biblical. Overworking is not a Virtue shown by either God or Jesus in the Bible.

Baby Steps Get it Done (in the End)

Making reasonable-sized, consistent efforts is more important than speed. As long as we keep working on our giant project, doing something day after day, we’re on the right track. Making these ‘baby steps’ one after another is how we get giant jobs done (besides getting started on them, which I wrote about last time).

In my case this means getting out on my land every day, and doing something to clear out, cultivate, and clean my land. I have many jobs to do, and all need to get done. As long as I do something to get me toward the goal, I’m on the right track.

Some days I’ll be able to do more, and some days I won’t have as much energy in me. I need to pace myself, and do what I can every day. As long as I keep working out there, and don’t give up, one day I will reach my goals with my land.

If we keep taking baby steps, we get the job done. And if we are consistent about taking those baby steps every day, our steps and our stride gets bigger as we go. And why is this important?? It’s not baby steps that are the important point here.

A great start is nice, but means nothing if we never finish at all. In everything we do, whether it’s a big project in the outdoors like I’m working on or something else, we need to be mindful of if we can endure to the End, and make adjustments if we see we’re not going to make it.

This applies to every project, job, task, dream, and passion in our lives. But it applies most importantly to our Spiritual Walk with Christ. We need to pace ourselves in our Spiritual life too. Everyone wants Spiritual growth, and wants it sooner rather than later. Nobody likes feeling “stuck” in a learning, preparation, or training phase. But sometimes that’s where we need to be. We need these phases for our ultimate good and our best growth, since it’s exactly these phases that prepare us to make the next part of the Spiritual journey. And so on and so forth until our task here in this temporary world is finished, one way or another.

We need to pace ourselves in all aspects of life, and every project, including our Spiritual life and the projects we might undertake there. Because what good is it to us, or to God, if we start a Spiritual journey but don’t make it to the end?? What does it mean to Christ if we start to keep His practices, but don’t keep them until the end??

What’s more important than how good or bad our start was, and how fast we go, is making it to the finish line. But if we can do that, we will be rewarded. So I will continue to go out there on my land, day after day, and do something, anything to progress toward the goal. I won’t quit and I won’t turn back. As for everyone else, I exhort you all to do the same for what you’re working on.

(26) To those who emerge victorious, keeping my practices until the end, I will give authority over the nations—

Revelation 2:26 (CEB)
