In the World War, we used propaganda to make the boys accept conscription. They were made to feel ashamed if they didn’t join the army.

So vicious was this war propaganda that even God was brought into it. With few exceptions our clergymen joined in the clamor to kill, kill, kill. To kill the Germans. God is on our side … it is His will that the Germans be killed.

And in Germany, the good pastors called upon the Germans to kill the allies … to please the same God. That was a part of the general propaganda, built up to make people war conscious and murder conscious.

Previous End Times Post

Part 50 Recap Post

Part 100 Recap Post

Hello Readers, hope all’s well. Time for another End Times post.

I’ve been thinking a lot about war lately. One reason is because of international tensions (this was written in mid-January, 2022). Tensions, y’know, “rumors of war” as Jesus chose to phrase it. But the main reason is because of the End Times dream I wrote about in Part 129. Although my first mention of it was a long time ago, all the way back in Part 5.

Because of what I saw in that dream three years ago, I have Faith that in 2022 the world will experience one or more of these things: A massive war, the mobilization/preparations for one, or a massive war scare. That last option we might call a “near-miss” for the world. That would be the best outcome, if those three options are the only choices to pick from.

Jesus of course warned us that we will hear of wars and rumors of wars. Nation will fight against nation. Some scholars link The First Horseman of the Apocalypse with war. (Other scholars link The First Horseman with other things though, so it’s not unanimous.) The Second Horseman of the Apocalypse is more explicitly connected with war. Civil war to be precise. And when do the Horsemen of the Apocalypse appear?? In the End Times, of course.

(6) You will hear about wars and reports of wars. Don’t be alarmed. These things must happen, but this isn’t the end yet. (7) Nations and kingdoms will fight against each other, and there will be famines and earthquakes in all sorts of places.

Matthew 24:6-7 (CEB)

The takeaway is that when we see a lot of wars and rumors of war, we know it’s a tragic but significant sign ….

Well, right now I’m reading a unique book about war. Of all the books about war out there, very few have a message like this one. The book (actually an essay) is War Is a Racket by General Smedley D. Butler. He was once the most decorated soldier in the United States Army. He fought in the United States Army in the early 20th century, including in World War 1. War Is a Racket was first published in 1935.

You can read War Is a Racket for free, right now, with THIS LINK.

His main argument in the essay is that interventionist war is only fought for the profits of the few billionaires who stand to gain from war. Hence the “racket” part. But the ones who pay the cost of war are the people … no one more so than the soldiers!! It’s a fascinating book, and I definitely recommend reading it. I recommend it even more since anyone can read it for free with the link above.

But General Butler’s thoughts on the profiteering and racketeering of war is not the topic for today. If you want to read what he says about it, please read his essay for free. The topic for today’s post is a part of the essay that jumped out to me. And that part was about how God is used (misused to be more accurate) in pro-war propaganda. We’ve got to be careful about how we use the name of God, and why. Is it acceptable to use God to justify our wars??

Let’s read what General Smedley Butler said about this in 1935.

Who Gets to Say God Is on Our Side??

General Butler explains how God was used for propaganda purposes to manipulate young men to fight in World War 1. The way he explains it highlights how ignorant, dishonest, and meaningless it is to use God for war propaganda purposes.

General Smedley D. Butler, War Is a Racket, 1935, Page 35

Pastors and priests on one side said it was God’s Will that we kill the young men on the other side. Pastors and priests on that other side said the same about our side. Which of these hatemongers were right, in God’s eyes, as they called for bloodshed??

World War 1 was much less of a moral question than World War 2. When the countries fighting a war are doing so to protect or further their own interests, who has the moral high ground?? They both call the other evil, and both invoke God in their hate-mongering to rile up their people against the other side. But in this kind of situation both countries are doing the same thing. In the case of WW1 even calling on the same God as General Butler points out.

So who’s right, in God’s eyes?? When both sides are doing the same thing, who’s right??

Keep God’s Name out of it

We must never use God in propaganda meant for war. God is not part of our foolish wars between one country and another, He’s not involved. He looks on with anger over the pointless loss of life, and pity for those who bear the suffering, injury, and death. And far too many of those who suffer in war—hell, most of those who suffer in war—are civilians.

God makes the sun rise in the morning on good and evil alike. When a war is a conflict between two countries, who can really be said to be the evil one versus the good one?? Who defines and hands out those judgmental and value-laden terms??

Those labels of “good” and “evil” depend on and are built on our perspective. We think of the other side as “evil” because they oppose our country’s interests and so on. But this is a dishonest and misleading distortion of reality, because the truth is there is no country, nation, race, or tribe of people on this earth that is 100% composed of evil people. Countries, nations, races, etc., are made up of all kinds of people and can’t be generalized like this. Generalizations about entire groups of people are always wrong, and adult minds know this. But wartime propaganda manipulates us into thinking in the childish terms of “our 100% good and Virtuous, noble country” versus “their 100% evil and irredeemable evil empire.”

But let me get back to the main point. Who gets to say whose side God is on?? Are we going to speak for God and put words in His mouth?? Are we going to drag His name into our needless wars and claim He is only on our side and no one else’s??

If God is on any side at all, He is on the side of the civilians who suffer the horrors of war and other dangers that come with it, like famine.

Blessed Are the Peacemakers

Well, what does God say about this?? Jesus taught us to make peace … He said BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS FOR THEY WILL BE CALLED GOD’S CHILDREN!!

(9) “Blessed are people who make peace, because they will be called God’s children.

Matthew 5:9 (CEB)

If Jesus said Blessed are the Peacemakers, we know where God stands on the question of war and peace. So how can we then drag God’s name into warmongering and hate-mongering propaganda?? That’s an insult to God.

And that’s not all. Jesus also taught us we must love our enemy as well as our neighbor.

(43) “You have heard that it was said, You must love your neighbor and hate your enemy. (44) But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who harass you (45) so that you will be acting as children of your Father who is in heaven. He makes the sun rise on both the evil and the good and sends rain on both the righteous and the unrighteous. (46) If you love only those who love you, what reward do you have? Don’t even the tax collectors do the same? (47) And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing? Don’t even the Gentiles do the same? (48) Therefore, just as your heavenly Father is complete in showing love to everyone, so also you must be complete.

Matthew 5:43-48 (CEB)

The message is clear. As Christians, ALL OUR EFFORTS MUST BE DEVOTED TOWARD THE CAUSE OF PEACE, FORGIVENESS, AND RECONCILIATION. THOSE ARE THE AREAS WHERE WE SHOULD INVOKE THE NAME OF GOD, NOT WARTIME PROPAGANDA.

In the end times “these things must happen,” as Jesus said, and that includes wars and rumors of wars. But that doesn’t mean we need to be onboard with any of this as Christians. And it most certainly doesn’t mean we should say nothing as the name of our God gets dragged into the mess. Even in these war-hungry End Times, we must be working to further the cause of Peace as Children of the Most High.

Invoking the name of God to stir up hatred and bloodlust toward others is a violation of everything Jesus taught. Using God for wartime propaganda is an anti-Christian blasphemy that must be opposed at every turn.
